THE leader of a Liberal Democrat group is standing down.

Councillor Nigel Martin, who was last week re-elected to represent the Neville’s Cross ward on Durham County Council, has announced he will be stepping down from the post, which he has held since 1989.

Coun Martin said: “It has been a great privilege to act as group Leader, and I have enjoyed holding the position – most of the time.

“I wish my successor, whoever it turns out to be, all good fortune in what will surely be a challenging period ahead.”
