A LEISURE centre will host a celebration to welcome the Olympic torch after winning a share of cash.
Peterlee Leisure Centre has secured £2,000 from Leisure in the Community to host the event on Sunday, June 17, as the relay passes through East Durham and to buy equipment for groups it has started to work with during the last year.
The new gear will be shared by Easington Carers, Home Group Well Being and Recovery Outreach Service, East Durham Belles and a new group being formed to help older people.
Malcolm Grinstead, the centre’s contract manager, said: “We are extremely happy to be receiving a substantial amount of funding for Peterlee Leisure Centre and are excited to establish a new group for older people.
“We are always looking for volunteers, so anyone wanting to get involved with any of the groups should contact the centre.”
All the groups meet from 9am to noon, with Easington Carers held on Mondays, East Durham Belles Ladies on Wednesdays for activities including swimming and racquet games and the Home Group on Thursday, also offering games and activities.
