SHOPPERS came face-to-face with the new all-electric Nissan Leaf as The Galleries launched its green transport campaign.

The Washington shopping centre is hosting a week of events aimed at encouraging customers and staff to use more environmentally-friendly forms of transport.

Sunderland City Council’s Go Smarter to Work campaign team is organising the events and Coun James Blackburn, the council’s Portfolio Holder for City Services, kicked off the week yesterday.

“What we want to do is encourage more people to consider different ways of travelling.

“One of main aims is to reduce congestion on some of the main transport routes thorough our region, such as the A1(M) Western Bypass and contributory roads such as the A1231.”
