YOUNG martial arts stars from Sunderland have done themselves and their city proud.

Dokan Karate Club, which holds training sessions in Bunny Hill, Fulwell and Red House, took a massive medal haul at the English National Championships in Sheffield.

Twenty bronze, 11 silver and nine golds were won by the club, putting them fifth in the overall club table.

Head coach Kevin Mitchinson said: “This is the big one that everybody wants to win something in.

“We were up against some associations that have been going for 40 years longer than us, so we’ve done really well. It’s a busy club and we get about 40 to 50 kids in each week.”

The stand-out performer was Lola Cassidy, eight, who claimed four golds.

“She’s done very well and she’s a real star,” added Kevin.

The club trains at different sessions throughout the week with beginners welcome to join. To find out more, call Kevin on 07939 130 411.
