STARS lit up Durham Cathedral at a Christmas concert in aid of the SAFC Foundation.

Rock royalty mingled with real royalty as the Countess of Wessex joined X Factor winner Joe McElderry, baritone Sir Thomas Allen, musician Rick Wakeman and singer and actress Barbara Dickson.

The Carols of Light concert aims to raise £80,000 for the Foundation which helps change the lives of young people across the North East.

West End musical supremo and SAFC fan Sir Tim Rice, who curated the event, said: “Sunderland may not be top of the league at the minute, but its Foundation certainly is.”

Speaking after the event, Sir Bob Murray, who founded the Foundation 10 years ago, said: “It was a very special night.”
