A TEENAGER proved she is a cut above the rest when it comes to fund-raising.

Jessica Young, from Houghton, took the plunge and had all her hair shaved off in aid of Cancer Research.

The 15-year-old’s family is raising money for the charity in memory of her great-aunt, Anne Greenwell, 55, from Grangetown, who died from lung cancer three years ago.

Jessica’s aunt, Wendy Young, 40, said: “She had breast cancer and treatment.

“A couple of years later, she just collapsed one day. The cancer had spread and she died eight days later.

“We were all devastated.”

Wendy said she is proud of her niece, a pupil at Kepier Academy, for deciding to have her long locks cropped at The Cutting Lounge in Houghton.

She said: “Jessica had long hair extensions in and they were starting to look tatty.

“She decided instead of taking them out she would shave the whole lot off to raise money for the charity.”

Wendy will raise money by taking part in Cancer Research’s Pretty Muddy event, a mud run next month, and her sponsorship page is www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/wendyanne-young.
