CELEBRATIONS are in full swing after a golf club ended its 36-year wait for a coveted trophy.

Bernie Munroe and Ron Young, from Houghton Golf Club, lifted the Hewet Tankard after beating competition from across the North East.

The Durham County Golf Union competition, which is only open to captains and vice captains, was last won by the club more than three decades ago.

“It was a great day,” said captain Bernie, 64, from Silksworth.

“There is always strong competition for the trophy, so you have to be on the top of your game.”

The event, at Billingham Golf Club, attracted entries from more than 40 teams. “We were both really pleased to bring the trophy back to Houghton,” said Bernie, a manager at an engineering company.

“You only get one shot at it. It is only open to captains and vice captains, positions which you can only hold once for a short time.

“The competition started in 1960 and the club last won it 36 years ago. The winning club is also asked to host the event the following year, which is something to look forward to.”
