LITTLE Eve Sloan was left heartbroken when mum Laura collapsed with a blood clot on the lung while out shopping.
The 35-year-old was rushed to hospital where she was diagnosed with a life-threatening pulmonary embolism, that needed months of specialist treatment.
As Laura battled to recover, eight-year-old Eve, of Moorside, Sunderland, would have been lost – had it not been for grandmother and best friend Judith Bell.
Judith, 65, stepped in and took care of the Benedict Biscop C of E Academy pupil, looking after her every need while also helping her daughter in her fight for life.
Laura said: “Eve is my life and the idea of her seeing her mammy so ill was very upsetting. My mam has a bond with my daughter that is so special and this has certainly helped us all get through what can only be described as a dreadful time, giving her all of the love in the world.”
Now, Laura has nominated Judith for the Echo’s I Love Mum competition, which aims to find Sunderland’s most deserving mum in time for Mother’s Day.
After Laura’s diagnosis, in August 2012, she spent months in recovery, until last October when she was found to be suffering from pleurisy.
She said: “I’m still suffering. Even just walking to the top of the street leaves me out of breath, but at least I’m starting to recover.”
Despite having to take huge amounts of medication every day and suffering severe scar tissue damage, Laura wants the people of Sunderland to know just how much her mam means to her.
She said: “Through all of this, mum has been an absolute superstar and I really can’t thank her enough for her help and care.
“She’s been there for us throughout this awful time and I don’t know what I would have done without her.”
Nominate your mum
WE have teamed up with the Bridges in Sunderland to offer a prize worth £150 to the winner.
We want to hear why your mum is Wearside’s number one.
Has she overcome an illness, cared for poorly relations or had a difficult year? This is your chance to show your mum just how much you care.
The winner will receive a Bridges gift card worth £50, as well as a box of treats from Lush, including soap bars, bath bombs and shower gels, while the Fragrance Shop is offering a bottle of Calvin Klein Endless Euphoria.
Andy Bradley, centre director at the Bridges, said: “Everyone has reasons that make their mum the best in the world and we want to hear about them.
“Whether she goes out of her way to help others or is the matriarch of your family, Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to spoil her, and what better way to show her how special she is than with this fantastic prize package?”
