SIX cars have been damaged after a suspected arson attack.
Five vehicles were destroyed and one damaged by heat after fires were deliberately started about 3am this morning.
Fire crews from Rainton Bridge station attended the blazes in Wear Street and Station Road, Hetton.
A spokesman for the Fire Service said the cause of the fires is unknown at the moment, though they are thought to have been started deliberately.
“The way they were started is unusual,” he said.
“Usually the window will be smashed and the fire started inside the car, but these were started under the front engine compartment.”
Police also attended the incident in the early hours of this morning.
Inquiries are ongoing to find those responsible and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is to carry will begin an investigation to determine the cause of the fires today.
