A RUGBY player was airlifted to hospital after it was feared he’d broken his neck.
Prop Michael Gibbon, 21, was injured in the match at Houghton Rugby Club, in Dairy Lane, on Saturday .
He was part of the Bishop Auckland Rugby Club’s third team playing in a friendly.
It is thought it happened after Mr Gibbon tackled a Houghton player at the start of the second half.
The Great North Air Ambulance was called.
Mr Gibbon was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, where he was found to have suffered severe whiplash.
Peter Gallone, of Bishop Auckland Rugby Club, said: “He won the ball and the other players drove into him.
“He heard a crack and was taken to hospital by the air ambulance.
“He was discharged with severe whiplash at 8pm. It was an accident.
“He has a young family and he has been very lucky that it wasn’t worse.”
