A SPORTS awards has kicked off its third season as it looks for grassroots heroes on Wearside.
The Barclays Community Sports Award recognises those who give up their time to run clubs and sessions which would otherwise not exist.
Nominations are being welcomed, with £1,000 a month to be handed to local sports champions to help them in their efforts.
The winners could also travel to London for a presentation from former Premier League player Gareth Southgate and may scoop a further £5.000.
The scheme is run by Barclays Spaces for Sports, the Premier League’s Creating Chances programme and the Football Foundation, with more details available via www.barclayscommunitysportsaward.com.
