INITIAL plans to build 80 homes on a field to extend a housing estate could be given the go-ahead next week.
The outline application has been put in to Durham County Council asking for permission to build the houses on land north of Windsor Drive in South Hetton.
The details of the development will be given in a further application, with only the access route via the existing road through Windsor Drive set out in documents.
The proposal has been recommended for approval by planning officers subject to conditions which will ensure affordable housing is included in the scheme, footways are put in place and payment is made towards education, sports and recreational areas in the village.
Officers say while the application is not in keeping with County Durham Plan policies, it would be in line with sustainable aims of the national planning framework.
Eight of the houses would be affordable homes, and while no types of houses have been confirmed by the applicant, Ms K Pattison, illustrations show it would feature detached and semi-detached houses, as well as bungalows, with between two and four bedrooms.
The application will be discussed by the central and east area planning committee on Tuesday at 1pm at County Hall, Durham.
