A DAY centre for the elderly held its first community dog show.

Thirty pets were entered for the show, at Glenholme Day Centre, Roker, Sunderland, with categories including best large and small dog, best waggly tail and cutest dog.

While the competition was fierce, everyone got into the spirit to raise money for the day centre users’ social fund.

Money was also raised for the Animal Crackers charity.

Day centre manager Shelly McDermott said: “We were getting a little worried just a week before the show because only two dogs had been entered and one of them was mine.”

She added: “However, it was fantastic to see so many people turn up on the day of the show, and it was literally standing room only.

“Everyone had a great time but the real stars of the show were the dogs and it was just a shame that not every one of them could win.”

The award for supreme champion of the show went to Gypsy, a Patterdale terrier owned by Rebecca Richardson.
