SCORES of horses and carriages caused tailbacks for motorists on city roads yesterday.

Shortly after noon, police received reports that around 40 horses and their riders were travelling in convoy in Hylton Road in Sunderland.

They were later seen in Chester Road, travelling towards the city centre.

The incident sparked a flurry of complaints and concern on social media.

Police officers spoke to the riders to make sure that traffic could be kept flowing smoothly, but many drivers faced delays.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said officers had approached those on the horse traps to ensure roads were kept safe.
