A NORTH East businessman has been honoured for his charity work.
John Mowbray, director of corporate affairs at Durham-based Northumbrian Water, has been presented with the Institute of Water’s WaterAid 2012 Award for Outstanding Commitment at the organisation’s annual conference.
Mr Mowbray is the first to be given the award, which the institute said was to celebrate exceptional commitment to transforming lives by improving access to safe water in the world’s poorest communities.
The institute said he has “shown outstanding commitment to WaterAid in terms of influencing and fund-raising, both within their company and individually”. He went to Malawi on a WaterAid fact-finding mission in 2005.
He has been chairman of the Northumbria WaterAid committee for the past 15 years, during which time £5million has been raised in the Northumbria region.
The charity says it costs just £15 to provide a clean drinking water supply and sanitation and hygiene education for a person in the developing world for their entire life.
