A WEARSIDE yacht club has helped launch a campaign to boost safety on the waves.

Sunderland Yacht Club hosted the RNLI lifejacket clinics, where members learnt how to carry out simple checks and ensure their kit was being worn correctly, as part of a national drive.

Last year, lifeboat volunteers across the country checked 7,900 lifejackets, with 603 reported failures.

Lifeboat sea safety officer Alan Dixon, said: “It’s much safer to get into the habit of wearing a lifejacket at all times when afloat, because it means you’ll be familiar with your particular lifejacket and how to operate it should an emergency situation unfold.”
