MORE than 100 vulnerable and lonely residents will soon have their spirits lifted, thanks to the launch of a new telephone befriending service.
The Chit Chat project has already recruited 10 volunteers who are ready to be a friendly voice at the end of the line to some of East Durham’s most isolated people.
The project, managed by East Durham Trust, will be officially launched by Durham City MP Roberta Blackman- Woods on Monday during a visit to a dedicated call centre at Community House in Peterlee.
Each of the volunteers will have a small caseload of people who have been referred by family or health professionals.
As well as checking on the welfare of individuals who have difficulty getting out and about, they will also provide a friendly voice and listening ear.
The project is being funded by the local Health Network and County Durham and Darlington NHS.
Anyone who would like to volunteer for the project can contact Abby Thompson at the trust on 569 3511.
Anyone who feels their family member would benefit from the service is also invited to get in touch.
