A Hebburn-based specialist company is helping to find the best in South Tyneside and Wearside’s arts, culture, hospitality and leisure scene.

UK Asbestos Specialists (UKasl) is the backer for the What’s On Where Awards, which honour everything from takeaways to parks and community areas, and hotels to the best shopping experience.

We are delighted to be supporting the competition. We are all about providing the best service possible

And what better supporter could we ask for. UKasl excels in the provision of asbestos awareness training to keep people safe from the dangers of what has become known as ‘The Hidden Killer’ material.

It provides training to the construction industry, where illnesses related to asbestos claim the lives of up to 5,000 people a year.

But thanks to UKasl, people in the industry are getting the very best support by providing asbestos awareness training.

And it does that by face-to-face methods and also through innovative online courses. Now the firm is also backing the What’s On Where Awards, run by the Shields Gazette and Sunderland Echo.

Les Cooper, from UKasl, said he was delighted to be supporting the competition as his firm was all about providing the best service possible.

The firm is keen to support excellence in other fields and that’s why the UKasl team were excited to be part of a competition which rewards the very best.

The company was established in 2003 and is now recognised to be UK’s leading asbestos-related training provider. Clients include housing associations, local authorities and private
companies, who are required by law to manage any asbestos risks in properties they own or manage.

And while the risks to workers are very different today from the days of heavy industry and shipyards, they still exist within the construction and refurbishment industries, said Mr Cooper.

The Best Western Roker Hotel will host the finale of our competition – held in association with our weekly entertainments guide, Wow 24/7.
