A DEDICATED team of top-class nurses is in the running for an Echo award.
The district nurses based at the Fulwell Medical Centre, in Ebdon Lane, Sunderland, were so highly regarded by an 81-year-old patient that she put them in the running for an Echo Best of Health honour.
The news stunned district nursing sister Jo McCann, who is part of the six-strong team which handles a caseload of almost 300 housebound patients.
Jo told us: “It is fantastic to be nominated and it was quite a shock to find out. I thought someone was winding me up at first.”
But she added: “It gives us great satisfaction to think that we are making a difference to patients in a positive way.”
Part of the district nurses’ duties is to look after people who are terminally ill.
They also help patients after they have had surgery and people living with chronic illnesses and conditions.
The team also gives help to people with diabetes who need injections, and looks after people who can attend the clinic at the medical centre.
Jo added: “I am elated that we have been nominated but I am elated for the team. Job satisfaction is working towards making someone better and providing patient comfort.”
The Best of Health awards have already had some impressive entries but we want even more.
It’s easy to nominate and you can do it either by using the form on this page or by going online and nominating on the Sunderland Echo website.
Feel free to put forward as many of your favourite health workers as you think deserve honours.
So whether it’s your favourite GP, an outstanding nurse or a popular carer, there’s a category for all parts of our health profession. All entries must be received by March 20. After that, a panel of judges will meet around a week later to begin the difficult task of narrowing down the field. They will draw up a shortlist in each of our categories. And all those who make it to the shortlist will be invited to the finals at the Stadium of Light on April 16.
To nominate, either fill in the form on this page or go online and enter at http://www.jpne-events.co.uk/best-of-health/
