A partner in a Wearside health practice was ‘blown away’ after being nominated for an award.

Gloria Middleton, who has been with the Westbourne Medical Group in Shiney Row for 25 years, said she was gobsmacked to be put forward for the Best of Health Awards.

I do it to give something back. If I can help someone, why not?

And there was more good news, as the practice as a whole was also put in the running for a title.

Gloria is the on-clinical partner at the practice which she first joined as a practice manager.

But on top of her work at the group, she is also:

* A community first responder with the North East Ambulance Service which she does on a voluntary basis.

* She has received the Queen’s Service Medal for her voluntary work.

* She is a specialist advisor for the Care Quality Commission and has held the role since 2014.

* Was the executive practice manager lead for the Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group between 2012 and 2016.

Yet despite all that, she said she was “taken aback” that a patient had put her in the running for an award.

The nomination said: “She always greets us with a smile and nothing is a trouble for her.”

It praised Gloria for her “unstinting care and concern.”

But modest Gloria said: “I do it to give something back. If I can help someone, why not?”

She joins a growing list of entries for this year’s competition which features entries from across Wearside and South Tyneside.

Sponsors for this year’s awards are South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust, City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, mydentist, NHS Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group and the Quality Hotel Boldon.

There are a range of categories to nominate someone for and once the nominations are in, a shortlist will be drawn up.

Finalists will then be invited to a finale at the Quality Hotel, in Boldon, on Thursday, April 27.

There are lots of categories to choose from, so there’s no excuse not to put your own health hero in the running for honours.
