Artist’s bike ride nets cash for Africa

Artist in Residence at Farringdon Academy, Sunderland, Mike Clay who is doing a 250 mile bike ride to helkp raise funds for pupils trip to Gambia.

A WEARSIDE artist managed to raise more than £500 for a school project by putting his pedal power to the test.

Mike Clay, artist in residence at Farringdon Community Academy, has completed a five-day sponsored bike ride.

The 54-year-old wanted to raise money for the school’s Gambia project, set up to support young people in the West African country.

Mike, of Hendon, said: “I really enjoyed the trip, and I had a fantastic time.”

The dad of one said he ended up cycling about 300 miles on a route taking him to Kielder Water, Newcastleton in Scottish Borders, Carlisle and Bowness-on-Solway before following Hadrian’s Wall back to the North East.

Mike said sponsorship money is still coming in, but he expects it to be be well over £500.
