HAIRDRESSING students were a cut above in a national competition.

East Durham College’s hair and beauty department picked up three medals at the Associated Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) annual colleges’ competition.

After winning a host of awards earlier in the year at the AHT regional competition in Gateshead, the students travelled to compete against colleges from across the UK at the finals in Blackpool’s Winter Gardens, and three picked up medals at the fiercely competitive event.

Level 2 hairdressing student Lisa Stoker, 31, from Peterlee, grabbed second place in the Fantasy Hair category.

NVQ Level 3 barber, Shannon Cummings, 19, from Peterlee, also picked up a second place in the Men’s Creative Designs and Patterns category.

Level 3 barber, Rachel Hodgeman, 21, from Hartlepool, was third in the same category.

Simon Smith, curriculum leader for hair and beauty, praised the students.

He said: “They performed really well in a tough competition at Blackpool, and it’s great to see the college come home with some medals.

“It was a really high standard, as always, and an amazing event to be a part of. There were over 2,000 people there.

“I’m delighted with the performance of the whole team, students and staff.”
