THE mother of a schoolboy who was killed crossing a busy road believes some good can come from the tragedy.
Madeline Walker’s son Brandon Nugent, 13, died in March when he was hit by a car as he headed across the A690 near Durham City.
Mrs Walker had hoped the crossing, which heads to Kepier Lane, would be closed.
However, she has now backed a decision to install a range of safety measures approved by Durham County Council.
Its highway committee agreed to signs and other measures, as closing the crossing would have taken some time, would have led to an inquiry and the final decision would have had to be taken by the Secretary of State.
Brandon’s mum was praised by members of the council for her bravery in attending the meeting and for joining in the consultation process.
Mrs Walker has said she bears no malice towards the driver, but wants to ensure no other family suffers.
She added: “It would have been easy to just sit at home, but I feel that by doing this I have achieved something.”
The council has said lighting for the spot will also be considered.
