A grenade has been found at a block of city flats.
Residents at Hendon Valley Court were evacuated yesterday afternoon after the small bomb, which is thrown by hand, was discovered in a garage.
Specialists from the army’s bomb disposal unit removed the grenade for examination.
Officers attended the scene, just off Villette Road, at 4.45pm yesterday.
A Northumbria Police spokesman, said: “The grenade was discovered in a lock-up to the back of the flats.
“The properties either side were evacuated as a precaution.
“We’re not sure what type of grenade it is yet or where it has come from.”
