GREAT grandad Bob Kennedy has been hailed by neighbours as champion of their street.
The 71-year-old, of South View, Fatfield, offered to help out trimming their garden hedges over a decade ago and has carried on ever since.
The residents got in touch with the Echo to express their gratitude for the work Bob’s done and got together to say a public ‘thank-you’ for his efforts.
Bob, who lives with wife Margaret and has six children, said: “I was delighted when I found out they were doing this because it’s nice to be appreciated.
“I’ve since found out they were discussing it among themselves before, but at the time I knew nothing about it.”
Bob, who used to run Hire Me Tool Hire in Herrington Burn before retiring, added: “When I first moved in the hedges in my garden were in a hell of a state.
“After I did my own I did an old lady’s because she obviously wasn’t able to do them.
“I ended up doing half of them in the street.
“Now, everybody stops to have a look at them.”
Sandra Reay, who lives next door to Bob, said that he was the best neighbour anyone in South View could hope for.
She said: “He’s cut everybody’s hedge every summer.
“They look great and when people walk up and down the street you can see them admiring them.
“We really want to give Bob a big thank-you for all the work he has done over the years.
“It’s not just the hedges he does, but other things if people need help. He is just a fabulous neighbour to have.”
Bob, a grandad of 15 and a great grandad of three, said: “It’s really nice of everyone to do this.
“I usually get a bottle of something from them at Christmas, but this is great.”
