A LOLLIPOP lady was presented with flowers by the children she has been helping cross the road safely to school.

Jackie Bland, of Villa Close, Millfield, has been helping pupils of Farringdon Primary School, in Archer Road, get to school for the last 16 years.

The 51-year-old left her position last Monday to start a new job as a domestic at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

She said: “I’m really sad to give it up but I just fancied a change and wanted a new challenge.

“I’m going to really miss the kids.

“They’re all lovely, and it was a real surprise to be given the flowers.

“The parents are lovely as well.

“I’ve been doing it for so long now that I used to cross a lot of the parents over to the school.

“I still see them now bringing their own kids.

“I think the only thing I’m not going to miss is the weather.”

Jackie, who started her now job at the hospital last Wednesday, also works for Sunderland City Council’s Meals at Home service delivering meals to vulnerable people across the city.

She said: “I’m a bit nervous about starting my new job but I get on with most people so I’m sure I’ll be OK.”
