CYCLISTS are gearing up to help a city charity.

Preparations are in full swing for the second Dublin to Sunderland (D2S) Cycle Challenge in aid of the Foundation of Light.

The D2S Cycle Challenge will cover a route of 380 miles, taking in the beautiful views of the Irish coast, Scotland and Northern England.

A team of 40 cyclists are expected to take part in the challenge, which starts on Tuesday, June 4, in Dublin and finishes five days later at the Stadium of Light.

The charity, which uses the popularity of football to reach out to youngsters, has announced that builders’ merchants Grafton Group plc has become the primary sponsor of the event.

Group chief executive Gavin Slark, who is originally from Sunderland, took part in the ride last year.

He said: “Last year’s event was a great challenge but even better, it gave me a chance to spend some fantastic quality time with my directors and really helped bring my team even closer together.

“Every successful business is built on the people who work within it, and the D2S Challenge was an unexpected opportunity for me to improve relationships throughout my team and have a good laugh.”
