ATHLETES gearing up for this year’s festival of running on Wearside can get tips from fitness experts next week.

Organisers of the Sunderland City Half Marathon and 10k runs have announced details of the latest Start Me Up For Sunderland event, with a major increase in capacity after the high level of demand for the first two sessions.

It’s been great to see such enthusiasm from people all over the city who want to get into running, but weren’t sure how to start.

Led by fitness entrepreneur and BBC Apprentice star Katie Bulmer-Cooke, the latest session will be held at the Virgin Active Health Club in Doxford Park, from 6pm to 7pm, on Thursday, April 2.

The session will include a special “Fit To Run” class and is free to the first 150 people who sign up, by emailing info@sunderlandcity10k.com.

Start Me Up For Sunderland, which kicked off with a session at The Bridges in Sunderland last month, is designed for anyone who wants to lead a more active lifestyle, but doesn’t know where to start.

Through a combination of mentoring, group runs with qualified coaches and training tips, the programme looks to build confidence and prepare participants to tackle events such as the Sunderland City 10K on Sunday, May 3.

The event at Virgin Active will help any novice runners take the first steps towards getting into shape for a 10K run. As an extra incentive, the Run Sunderland team will be on site offering a 10 per cent discount for places on the Sunderland City Half Marathon and 10K, for everyone who participates in next week’s session.

Katie said: “Start Me Up For Sunderland has been really well received so far.

“It’s been great to see such enthusiasm from people all over the city who want to get into running, but weren’t sure how to start.

“Thanks to Virgin Active, we are able to host this free session for a much larger number, and I am sure that it will be another big success.”
