BLACK Cats fans can get their paws on a piece of history from one of Sunderland’s greatest days – and help worthy charities.
Sunderland AFC Supporters’ Association has special stamp covers signed by each member of the 1973 FA Cup-winning side and has decided 40 years on from the victory that they should be sold.
The covers were hand-franked at Wembley following the 1-0 triumph over Don Revie’s Leeds United and all feature an informative filler card inside.
All are numbered and signed as authentic.
Cash raised will go towards Sunderland Former Players’ Association and Cancer Research UK.
Lifelong SAFC fan George Forster, who is chairman and sales officer of the supporters’ association, was one of the thousands fans who journeyed to London for what is still the Wearsiders’ greatest post-war achievement.
“We’ve got signed covers from all of the players, from Jim Montgomery to David Young, who was substitute on the day,” said George, who along with other volunteers works at the supporters’ association most days of the week.
Each player signed 20 of the covers and they are on offer at £10 plus £1 postage and packaging and 50p for a stamp.
“If we can make £1,000 that would be fantastic,” added George.
“We think it’s the right thing to do to help these charities.”
l To buy a cover, send a cheque made payable to George W Forster to Sunderland AFC Supporters’ Association, 1/2 Monk Street, Sunderland, SR6 0DB.
If a cover signed by a certain player is oversubscribed, any player available will be sent.
Alternatively, visit the shop in person. Buyers are only allowed to purchase one cover per person.
