A SUNDERLAND venue is in the awards hunt after it was hailed as “a big part of the city nightlife.”
Gatsby, in Derwent Street, has been nominated for a What’s On Where award. The news could not have come at a more appropriate time for husband and wife business partners John and Karen Dickman who have just opened another venue nearby called Port of Call.
The couple have had Gatsby for more than five years and John explained how investment had been the key to success. He said: “We were the first bar in Sunderland to have all HD screens. That has allowed us to be a great sports bar.”
But as well as being a draw for football fans, Gatsby also caters for people wanting a good food offer. John added: “It is all home cooked. We serve breakfasts from 9.30am to lunch and it does very well. We even have early evening special prices on, when you are finishing work.”
Gatsby’s success has allowed John and Karen to invest in another premises. Port of Call is based on an industrial theme to symbolise the shipbuilding industry. “These are very exciting times,” John added.
Gatsby’s nomination came from an Echo reader who said: “It is a big part of the city nightlife as well as offering good food and service with excellent coffee. Be prepared for a great night when you go to Gatsby’s. John and Karen Dickman have put this bar on the map for all the right reasons.”
The popular venue joins an ever-growing list of entrants in this year’s What’s On Where competition but there is plenty of time to put forward your favourites. The deadline for entries is February 5.
Then, we will be revealing the winners on February 26 in a glittering finale at The Best Western Roker Hotel.
The awards are held in association with our weekly entertainments guide, Wow 24/7, and aim to reward the elite in everything from restaurants to children’s venues, takeaways to parks and community areas, and hotels to the best shopping experience.
