RESIDENTS of a Sunderland street are lucky to be alive after a gas explosion ripped through three homes in the early hours of this morning.

The blast happened in the ground-floor flat of a house in Halidon Road, Hill View, shortly after 2am.

The upstairs flat and three neighbouring properties were also seriously damaged in the explosion.

A 45-year-old resident was rushed to Sunderland Royal Hospital with burns. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find the flat “totally destroyed”.

Watchmanager Alan Patterson, from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The property was a downstairs, terraced flat which was totally destroyed by the explosion.”
