A family-run business – born from shipyard redundancy money – has been nominated for two national awards.

Jim Hayes, 71, and his wife Jean, 53, opened Park Lane Cards in Sunderland's open air market in 1983 and now they have nine stores in the North East.

This week, their sons, David, 39, and James, 41, attended the RETA Greetings Cards Awards at the Dorchester Hotel, London.

David said: "My father worked down the shipyards most of his life and when they closed he spent part of his redundancy money, which wasn't a lot, buying a few boxes of cards to trade on the new Park Lane Market.
