A Washington mum who vowed to raise money for charity after her husband was diagnosed with lung cancer has been recognised for her efforts.

Nicola Bond, 38, embarked on a fundraising campaign for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation after her husband Paul was diagnosed with the disease - despite never having smoked a cigarette in his life.

Now the mum-of-one’s efforts have been recognised with a nomination for a Best of Wearside Award.

“We are so thankful for all the support we have had over the years,” Mrs Bond said.

“I just started fundraising in the hope of raising awareness of the fact that lung cancer doesn’t have to be caused by smoking.

“I have now raised £4,000 for the foundation which helps people who are directly affected by lung cancer.”

In May 2013, Paul Bond was diagnosed with the condition after he had a cough that wouldn’t go away.

Paul, 38, has spent the last three years undergoing chemotherapy, and is now on new drug trials in a bid to beat the disease.

As part of her campaign Mrs Bond completed a sky dive back in 2013 and then in 2014 she launched a “love your lungs” campaign which saw people sharing pictures on social media to raise funds.

She added: “It is really nice to be nominated for the award and it is a lovely feeling to have something positive happening.
“It is good that people are taking notice of what we are doing.”
