This year is the 75th anniversary of the sinking of the City of Benares, when 77 child evacuees lost their lives, after being torpedoed in mid Atlantic en-route to Canada. Sunderland Volunteer Life Brigade has organised a memorial service to take place on October 3 at All Saints’ Church, Fulwell Road, at 11am. During the service tributes will be paid to all the children including the nine from Sunderland. The SVLB Watch House at Roker will have a display of information on the disaster which will be open to the public on that Saturday from 1pm –to4pm and on the Sunday, October 4, from noon to 4pm. Sunderland Illuminations takes place in Roker Park from Saturday until Novermber 1.

Roker Crafts meet on Fridays from 1pm to 3pm in Roker Methodist Church hall. Each session is led by a member of the group. This week it will be autumn leaves cards, led by Elizabeth. Take along a basic craft kit (pen, pencil, fine scissors and a cutting board and any textured or otherwise interesting autumn coloured papers). Ring 5495878 for further details.

Sunderland Philatelic Society meets in the hall of Roker Methodist Church, on the corner of Roker Park Road and Lonsdale Road, tomorrow at 7pm for an auction. For information, call Fred Greener on 3852196.

All Saints’ Mothers’ Union will meet on Monday, Septmber 28, at 2pm. Speaker will be Joan Carlton MU diocesan president. All ladies are welcome.

A Macmillan Coffee Morning will be held in the Priestman Hall, St Andrew’s Church, Roker, on Saturday, from 10am to noon.

Sainsbury’s Fulwell’s charity of the year is Pawz for Thought. The big bike ride by the manager and members of the staff on 13th Sept raised £375. The total for year to date is £747.

Line dancing for beginners is held on Fridays from 1pm to 2pm in Redby Community Centre, term-time only.

Wearside Photo Imaging is a small camera club of photographic enthusiasts who meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month at Fulwell Community Association, Chapman Street, Fulwell, at 7.30pm. Activities are many and aimed at increasing knowledge in photography and image manipulation. New members are welcome.

A Fulwell ward surgery will be held in Fulwell Library, Dene Lane, on Sat urday from 10.30am to 11.30am, when one of the ward councillors, Howe or Francis, will be in attendance.
