WHAT a scoop – 500 cinema-goers have been treated to free ice cream as Empire Cinema marks a milestone.

It’s 10 years since the cinema chain opened its doors as part of the new Sunniside complex.

To celebrate, the first 500 customers to the venue yesterday each received a scoop of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream.

In return for the free sweet treats, cinema-goers were asked to make a donation to Grace House.

John Hodgson, general manager at Empire Cinemas Sunderland, said: “To celebrate 10 years of cinema in Sunderland, we’re giving away some ‘cool’ treats to our loyal customers – 500 scoops of delicious Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

“Mean Girls, Anchorman, Saw and Shaun of the Dead were just some of the iconic films out in 2004.

“Ten years on, the film line-up at Empire Cinemas Sunderland has gone from strength to strength, with recent blockbusters such as Interstellar and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.”
