Paul Dunn fondly remembers the night that an awards audience gave him a standing ovation.

It was only 12 months ago that he got deserved applause after winning the Show Or Performance of the Year Award in the What’s On Where competition.

If you are lucky enough to be nominated, embrace it and put it out there as much as possible. It helped our company to up their profile

But as we get ready to launch this year’s competition, Paul was first to tell readers: “It’s worthwhile being a part of this.

“I would encourage anyone who thinks they would like to nominate, to do it in whatever category they want.

“ And if you are lucky enough to be nominated, embrace it and put it out there as much as possible. It helped our company to up their profile.”

Paul, from South Shields, won for his performance in I Left My Heart In Roker Park which is a brilliant play, looking at Sunderland Football Club’s past in an appropriate portion of both laughter and tears.

The show, about the ups and downs of a Sunderland AFC fan, attracted hugely diverse audiences - from regular theatre goers to football fans who had never set foot in a theatre before.

All those who nominated it for a What’s On Where honour agreed it was an absolute winner which deserved the Show of the Year award.

The show has been performed at places including the Customs House in South Shields – where the public loved it so much, more performances had to be put on.

Paul added: “It helped us to grow. We were able to advertise the fact we had been nominated.”

Now, his performing arts company is planning a season of new writings and performances to start in January.

In the meantime, we want nominations for this year’s competition - held in association with our weekly entertainments guide, Wow 24/7 - which will culminate at the Best Western Roker Hotel next February.

Sponsors already on board are Hebburn-based UK Asbestos Specialists (UKasl).
