FOOTBALLERS will swap the pitch for the streets of Sunderland as they hope raise cash for a partner team in Africa.

Players from Sunderland Samba Football Club have signed up for this May’s Sunderland City Half Marathon.

The lads are ditching their boots in favour of trainers to help the women’s Sunderland Samba team, who play in a provincial league in Nairobi, Kenya, who the Wearside club have links with.

The team will be running alongside one of their Kenyan ambassadors.

John Boyd, of Sunderland Samba, who play in the North East Christian Fellowship League, said: “We’ve been working with the team in Kenya since 2003 and help to employ a coach and co-ordinator for them.

“Hopefully, they’ll arrange a community run over there at the same time as our players so we can link up together.”

The Sunderland City 10k and half marathon races take place on Sunday, May 3, starting and ending at the Stadium of Light.
