Flat damaged in blaze

A FLAT has been gutted after a blaze broke out in the early hours of today.

 Firefighters were called to Sutherland Place, Gilesgate, Durham, at 4.45am after reports of the incident.

 They arrived to find flames rising from the windows of the ground-floor property.

 Four officers wearing breathing apparatus were sent in to the building and managed to put out the flames.

 A neighbouring first-floor flat was also left heavily smoke-logged in the incident.

 No one was in either property at the time.

 The cause of the fire has not been confirmed and an investigation is under way by the police and fire service.
