A DOWNPOUR in Wearside flooded roads and damaged shops this afternoon.

Our photographer Kevin Brady captured cars spraying water across the pavements in Tay Road, Grindon.

Firefighters from Seaham were called to three homes in Walkworth Crescent in Westlea to pump out water and Massimo’s restaurant in South Crescent after its cellar flooded.

MacDonalds at Dalton Park has been forced to close after getting water in its fryers.

The Byron Place shopping centre was also flooded after its roof and drains struggled to cope with the amount of rain which fell within a short space of time.

At 2pm about six inches of water seeped into the building, causing Wilkinsons, Bright House and Peacocks to close while it was cleared away. Argos was also forced to close for the day after water caused damage in its stock room.

Bosses at the centre said they and shop staff were working hard to clear up the affected areas and hoped everything would be open again today.
