A FISHERMAN had to be rescued after his boat’s propeller broke.
Volunteers from Sunderland RNLI scrambled into action after they saw red distress flares near the vessel, just off Whiteburn Steele, Whitburn.
After getting into difficulty the man deployed anchor but found himself drifting towards rocks.
The RNLI lifeboat quickly got to the boat, which was just east of Seaburn Beach, and towed it back to Sunderland Harbour, after it had already received help from a passing fishing vessel which had seen the distress call.
The incident happened at around 10am on Thursday.
