SPECTACULAR shows will light up the skies above Wearside on Saturday as part of annual Bonfire Night celebrations.

Ashbrooke fireworks display, at Ashbrooke Sports Club, West Lawn, is expected to be one of the most-popular bonfires.

The event, which begins at 6pm on Saturday, should see thousands of people turn out.

Tickets are priced at £6 per person and are available to buy from Sunderland Tourist Information Centre.

Hetton Lyons Cricket Club, in Hetton, is hosting a fireworks spectacular. Houghton Round Table is organising the event, with gates opening at 6pm.

Ground and aerial displays are scheduled for kick-off at 7pm.

A funfair with attractions can be enjoyed as well as refreshments.

Admission is priced £3 for adults and £2 for children.

Durham Constabulary and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service are putting on a show at police headquarters in Aykley Heads.

Visitors will be allowed in from 5pm, with the bonfire due to be lit at 7pm. The fireworks spectacular will get under way at 7.30pm.

Refreshments including fish and chips, hot dogs and hot roasted chestnuts will also be available.

Fire service staff are set to put on a number of demonstrations to get across important safety messages related to Bonfire Night.

Admission is £3 per person, although children under the age of five are allowed in free.

Charities in the area will benefit from the proceeds once costs have been met.

South Tyneside Council meanwhile has joined forces with Ocean Beach Pleasure Park to host two displays on Sunday evening.

A short one at 6.30pm will be followed by the main display at 8pm behind Ocean Beach Pleasure Park at South Shields seafront.

Entertainer Tommy the Trumpeter will be on hand to entertain the crowds and counting down to the fireworks.

Seafront car parks will be open until 11pm and there will also be additional parking spaces in Bents Park.

Spectators are asked not to bring their own fireworks or sparklers to the event.

Oakleigh Gardens School, in Cleadon, will hold a firework display on Saturday, with gates opening at 5.30pm ahead of a 7.15pm start.

A funfair is being held as part of the festivities.

Tickets can be bought on the gate, priced £6 for adults and £4 for children (aged under 14).
