A FIRE and rescue service has launched a new project to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking and drinking.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service launched the scheme last week in Durham City’s Palace Green after a spate of house fires caused by careless smoking and excessive alcohol.
Firefighters in the area have been trained in a number of new ways that are linked to improving health, including stop smoking, alcohol screening and respiratory care training.
The advice is being passed on to the public through the new “Ice” (In case of emergency) cards.
The small cards have a strip on which to write the number of an emergency contact, with a safety message on the other side. The aim of the Ice cards is to make people aware of the support services that are available.
