STRIKING firefighters took to the picket line for the beginning of a bank holiday of industrial action.
Frontline firefighters walked out between noon and 5pm yesterday with further action planned from 2pm until 2am today and tomorrow, between 10am and 3pm. The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) is embroiled in an ongoing dispute with the Government over pensions.
Gordon Chalk, Sunderland representative for the union, said: “We gave the Government a deadline and the chance to resolve this but they have come back with nothing.
“This has left us with no choice but to take action three times over this bank holiday weekend.”
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWF&RS) are warning residents to be vigilant during the strike times.
