THE former Dewhirst factory in Pennywell has been badly damaged after a fire broke out in the early hours.

Two fire engines from Farringdon fire station and one from Washington were called to the empty building on the Pennywell Industrial Estate at 4.50am on Friday.

The fire, which was confined to one part of the building, was extinguished by 6.30am.

The vacant factory has been left badly waterlogged and is still in the process of being dried out with fans.

Police officers were this morning standing guard outside as the premises have been left insecure.
