A FIRE sparked by arsonists has left a trail of destruction after it tore through an allotment site.

Three sheds and a brick building were destroyed in the attack at the Withering Hope allotment site in Easington Colliery, at 3am yesterday.

An investigation has confirmed the blaze, which was put out by firefighters, was started deliberately.

Despite the damage caused by the heat, flames and smoke, dozens of pigeons which were inside the sheds escaped injury.

Police, who have previously run an awareness campaign after a spate of arson attacks on sheds in the village, have appealed for help to track down the vandals.

Sergeant Paul Footes, of Easington Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The owners of these allotments are devastated.

“Crime will not be tolerated and we are asking anybody with information to get in touch. Perhaps someone has returned home smelling of burning or has been acting suspiciously, and we would ask them to come and speak to us.”

He said advice on how to help make outbuildings secure is also available from his officers.

Police can be called on 101, or Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
