Fire in bedroom of Sunderland hospital

Firefighters were called to an early morning blaze at a Sunderland hospital.

A fire broke out in one of the bedrooms of Hopewood Park hospital this morning.

Two engines from Sunderland Central station and one from Farringdon were called to the site, formerly Cherry Knowle, in Ryhope at 6.10am today.

The cause of the blaze is still being investigated.

Staff had evacuated the hospital by the time firefighters arrived. They had to use breathing apparatus to extinguish the blaze.

The bedroom was left badly damaged.
