FIRE chiefs have hit back at claims Sunderland Central Station could be closed by May next year.
Fears were raised by Dave Turner, Fire Brigade Union (FBU) North East regional secretary, at a public meeting held by Sunderland Against The Cuts, last week.
However, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Authority has denied any such suggestion.
Chief Fire Officer Tom Capeling, of Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The Fire Authority motion in February made it clear that any station closures would be in the final phase of a minimum three year-implementation plan, and would only occur as a last resort.
“As such, any claim that any station would close before May 2015 is unfounded, misleading and simply not true.”
