PLUMES of smoke could be seen by spectators at Sunderland Airshow after a blaze broke out in a nearby cornfield.
The fire yesterday evening was quickly brought under control by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue service and airshow organisers say it had no effect on the displays.
Firefighters raced to the scene after the field caught fire during the Red Arrows display and some onlookers saw the crafts disappear behind a cloud of grey smoke.
A message posted on the Sunderland International Airshow facebook page at about 7pm yesterday read: “The fire in the field away from #SunAirshow is now under control. We are assured that it will not affect anyone’s journey home. We’ll done to the fire services for dealing so quickly with it.”
Earlier, in an attempt to reassure visitors, they had posted: “If you can see smoke in the direction of #SunAirshow, it isn’t us. There appears to be a field on fire near Whitburn.”
