FINISHING touches are being put to a carnival-style parade set to hit the streets of South Shields.
Hundreds of schoolchildren, community groups and uniformed organisations will parade through the town centre on Saturday as part of South Tyneside’s annual Summer Festival.
Crowds will line the route to watch the Mardi-Gras-style parade as it makes its way at 1pm from South Shields Town Hall, along Fowler Street, Ocean Road and Sea Road to Bents Park.
There will also be stalls, music and family entertainment galore at the free Summer Fayre in Bents Park, running until 5pm.
Following tradition, the Festival Parade will feature a vibrant mix of dancers in their colourful costumes, as well as various community groups and schools.
There will also be ribbons, banners and flags, music and drumming, marching bands and uniformed organisations adding to the festival atmosphere.
The parade will feature creative contributions from local people, who have been working with artists from Real Tyne at The CustomSpace on special artwork and large sculptures symbolising the event’s Let’s Celebrate ... Get Active theme.
The party continues on Sunday, with a Festival Fun Day in Bents Park, from 12.30pm to 4.30pm.
A whole host of entertainment is planned, including performances by Eliza Smiles, the Tea Ladies, Galloping Acrobatics, Martell’s Raiders Wild West Show, Jordy Cernik and Punch and Judy, as well as a double decker bus display, a kite show, circus skills, sports and bike stamping by Northumbria Police.
Sunday night will also see Proms in South Marine Park, with soprano soloist Bibi Heal performing from 7pm to 9pm.
Free Sunday gigs in Bents Park as part of the Summer Festival include B*Witched and X Factor winner Shayne Ward and The Waiters on July 13, 10cc and UK Rock Legends on July 20, and Heather Small, of M People fame, supported by Scarlett Street, on July 27.
