A BLAZE which tore through a field of hay stubble caused smoke which could be seen for miles.

Firefighters from Fulwell, Sunderland Central, North Moor and South Shields were called to the field off Wendover Way in Witherwack, close to Red House Academy, at 1.30pm.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service received a series of calls reporting the blaze, with residents in Boldon and towards the coast able to see the smoke,

The crews used beaters and hose reels to put out the fire, with the farmer helping to create a break with a plough to halt the course of the flames.

The teams spent around 90 minutes at the field, which as recently been harvested.
